Songwriter, producer, and designer
Eleanor Murray has spent almost twenty years crafting a body of work that exists in a genre all its own. Emerging from the rich musical landscape of the Pacific Northwest, her sound has long been informed by folk traditions — but never confined by them. Her songs have drawn from Appalachian rhythms, jazz-influenced melodies, and poetic lyricism, resulting in music that is as structurally intricate as it is emotionally expansive.
With 12 releases to her name — eight as a solo artist and four through collaborations — Murray has continuously evolved, never content to repeat herself. From haunting folk ballads to raucous marches, her work has always reflected an artist in motion. She has performed hundreds of live shows, earning a reputation as a compelling voice in indie music — sharing stages along the way with artists like Tune-Yards, Mountain Man, and Kimya Dawson.
Her albums have spanned a wide range of material and her collaborations extend this range even further. Eleanor is the singer and producer of the electro-pop and dance project Cavegreen, along with lyricist Gianluca Bucci. Eleanor is also the other half of AANTARCTICAA, a haunting post-rock band with Ben Kamen, founder of Olympia Noise Co. And last but not least, Eleanor explored more traditional folk songwriting with fiddle player Pamela Margon, in their acoustic project Tattered Dress.
Eleanor Murray’s newest full-length album PLAY LOVE is out now. These new songs dive into the world of pop, blending booming synths with the earthy intimacy of her folk roots. Centered around themes of young, girlish love, each track offers a fresh take on desire and power. Writing, producing, and recording the songs herself, Murray brings her signature honesty and depth to this vibrant new sound. It’s not a departure, but a transformation — the next step in her evolution as an artist unafraid to reinvent herself.
“The single, “Sweet Like Honey,”... is a bold and breathtaking approach to the music industry. Leaning on gritty production and hazy guitar and mastering of craft, Murray leaves it all on the table for her new album [PLAY LOVE].”
“[‘Sweet Like Honey’ has] a carpe-diem thematic sentiment... choosing to treasure the day rather than delve into rote tasks… One of many highlights throughout the new album PLAY LOVE.”
“This new album [PLAY LOVE] will mess you up with all kinds of non-guitar-strum heartbeats and hair-in-your-eyes smiles. …Eleanor is under the covers and over the moon and melting and ever-wary, and ever not ready to come down from whatever astral plane she occupies to come up with songs like these.”
“[Baby It’s So Easy] shines for its economy: few layers of sound, but curated with the care of someone who knows exactly what to remove to make the essential stand out…A song that doesn’t pretend to change the world, but it succeeds in making the world a little softer.” ”
“One moment you think you have Eleanor Murray figured out, but then she shows you that she’s not an easy catch. You cannot draw a square around her and call it good – she is undefinable.”
“Eleanor Murray is impossibly good…To call her folky would be undercutting the beauty of what she does.”
“Ms. Murray is bound for greatness; anyone who sees her play live is, pretty instantly, a fan.”
“…one of our best “unknown” musicians.”
